What you are asking is the basic concept of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
SEO is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines.
What are Search Engines? GOOGLE, BING, YAHOO, etc..
In other words, when a person google searches "How do I drive people to my website?", the websites with the best SEO will show up first on google. You are competing with the world.
The first thing you need think about when working on getting traffic to your website is "KEY WORDS". This is a few words or phrase that conveys the key concept of your business/website.
Lets use a bikini company as an example.
I am a designer who just started making bikinis. My website is up and running, looks professional and ready to be seen. Now is the time to work on SEO. I am ready to find my "key words".
Should my key word be "bikini"? Click here to see the google search results for bikini. As you can tell, the websites that come up first are Pacsun, Target, Billabong, etc... I am assuming that you would feel out of your league trying to compete against large corporations such as these. You are right. There is no hope.

(A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines as the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that is intended to impact. It is also a small market segment.)
Finding the perfect nitch market to enter can be difficult and sometimes is the make or break to success online. I use an advanced software made by MOZ to help me scan my clients competitors, location and desired traffic flow to help me find the best market to enter.
YES "key words" are markets. The market for the word bikini is what you saw when looking at the search results on the link above. You can enter multiple markets, but is is highly recommended that you start with one until you are ranking well for that specific "key word". Your rank is based on the number in which your website comes up on search engines such as google.
Back to my (make-believe) bikini company.
I did some research and found that the best "key words" or "market" to enter for my specific bikini brand was "Hawaiian Handmade Bikinis".
I am not going to go over all the variables that to into having the best SEO, but these are the key concepts behind what I believe to be the most effective ways to gain traffic and fast. Please read my blog post on SEO if you are new to this concept.

Whats the most important? INBOUND LINKS (when another website puts adds a link to your website)
Inbound links are the most important aspect of being successful online.
Reach out to everyone and anyone you can who has a website and see if they would be interested in putting a link to your website. The best people to reach out to are bloggers who show up under your "key word". Collaborate with as many companies as you can and inquire about selling your product in any online stores that show up when you search your "key word"
There are so many different ways to get inbound links, make sure they are legit and organic. The algorithm that google and many other search engines use are able to see if you were the one who created the link or if it was legit.
Dont to any funny business when it comes to SEO. Your site can be flagged and that will ruin your ranking.
